Calcium Total

The Calcium Total test measures the total amount of calcium in your blood, including both free (ionized) calcium and calcium bound to proteins. Calcium is an essential mineral critical for bone and teeth health, muscle function, nerve signaling, blood clotting, and hormonal regulation. Abnormal levels may indicate various conditions: high calcium (hypercalcemia) can be due to hyperparathyroidism, cancer, or excessive vitamin D intake, while low calcium (hypocalcemia) may result from kidney disease, vitamin D deficiency, hypoparathyroidism, or malnutrition. This test helps in monitoring metabolic disorders, bone diseases, and electrolyte imbalances. Proper interpretation usually considers albumin levels.
