The CA-125 test measures the level of cancer antigen 125, a protein found in the blood, often elevated in ovarian cancer and certain other conditions. It is primarily used to monitor treatment response, detect recurrence in women with known ovarian cancer, and sometimes assist in evaluating pelvic masses. Elevated CA-125 levels may also occur in non-cancerous conditions like endometriosis, menstruation, pregnancy, liver disease, and pelvic inflammatory disease, so results are interpreted alongside imaging and clinical findings. This test is not recommended for routine screening in asymptomatic women due to limited specificity.
