Bile Pigments/Salts – Urine

The Bile Pigments/Salts – Urine test is a diagnostic laboratory investigation used to detect the presence of bile pigments (primarily bilirubin) and bile salts in the urine. Normally, urine contains no or minimal bile components. Elevated levels may indicate liver dysfunction, bile duct obstruction, or hemolytic disorders. The test is performed by collecting a fresh urine sample, followed by chemical or microscopic analysis. A positive result may present as dark-colored urine, often described as amber or tea-colored. This test aids in diagnosing jaundice, hepatitis, gallstones, or cholestasis, and monitoring liver-related treatments. Early detection through this test can prevent progression of liver or biliary diseases.
