The Beta-2 Microglobulin (B2M) test measures the level of B2M protein in the blood or urine. B2M is a small protein found on the surface of most cells, especially lymphocytes, and is shed into the bloodstream during normal cell turnover. Elevated B2M levels may indicate kidney dysfunction, as impaired kidneys cannot efficiently filter it, or suggest certain hematologic conditions like multiple myeloma, lymphoma, or chronic lymphocytic leukemia. It is also used to monitor disease progression, treatment response, and prognosis in these disorders. Low levels are rare and usually not clinically significant. The test is often performed alongside other kidney and immune function assessments to provide a comprehensive evaluation. Proper sample collection and timely analysis are essential for accurate results.
