Amylase

The Amylase test is a blood or urine test that measures the level of amylase, an enzyme produced mainly by the pancreas and salivary glands. Amylase plays a key role in breaking down carbohydrates into simple sugars that the body can absorb. Doctors often order this test to help diagnose or monitor conditions related to the pancreas, such as acute or chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic duct obstruction, or pancreatic cancer. Elevated levels may also occur in gallbladder disease, gastrointestinal obstruction, or kidney problems, while decreased levels may indicate severe pancreatic damage or liver disease. The test is usually performed when a patient presents with abdominal pain, fever, nausea, or loss of appetite. Results are interpreted along with lipase and other clinical findings for accuracy.
